ArchaeoHeritage - Gladiator school ruins found near Vienna

Archaeologists have discovered the ruins of a gladiator training school at the Roman site of Carnuntum outside the Austrian capital Vienna.

The detail of the structure was similar to that of the Colosseum and the gladiatorial training school Ludus Magnus in Rome, the Carnuntum archaeological park said.

However, the size of the ruin and its well-preserved state made it "a worldwide unique" site, the park said.

An international team of archaeologists uncovered the gladiator school using ground-penetrating radar equipment, after which it was dug up.
