Would you drink your dirty bathwater? Of course not. Yet every day, even as many people around the world drink and bathe in clean water, others aren’t so lucky. Consider that, as you read this e-mail: - More than 1 billion people lack reliable access to clean drinking water.
- About 2.6 billion lack access to sanitation.
- And on average, a child dies every 15 secondsfrom waterborne disease.
It doesn’t matter who you are, where you’re from, or what your lot is in life. You need water for your most basic needs — and many people simply aren’t having those needs met. What We’re Doing At Conservation International (CI), we work every day to solve the freshwater problem. And we think big — because we have to think big. Simply put, we believe that solving human health crises isn’t just about clean water. It’s about the ecosystems that provide clean water. Think about it. Much of the world’s fresh water undergoes a long journey before it ever arrives at a place populated by humans. It begins as precipitation or runoff from mountains. It travels in lakes, rivers, and streams. It passes through forests, swamps, and underground reservoirs. And if any of those ecosystems are harmed, there won’t be enough water to go around. After all, just 1 percent of Earth’s fresh water flows freely. We don’t have enough water to waste or pollute it. At CI, we believe in a world where everyone understands and values what healthy ecosystems provide: nothing less than life itself. Nowhere is that more evident than in a simple drink or bath. Please help us spread the word about the critical need to protect freshwater ecosystems — so that everyone, everywhere, has access to clean, safe water for drinking and bathing: Thanks so much for your support.
